Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM)

Germany

The mission of Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is to deploy technology in a safe and environmentally friendly way. Our research, testing, approval and regulation activities are intended to promote safety in engineering and chemistry. As a higher federal authority and departmental research institution of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi), with 1700 employees, we have national and international responsibilities, cooperate with universities and non-university research institutions and support young academics.

Department 8 “Non-destructive Testing”, with 165 employees, has expertise in radiological, acoustic, optical, electrical, magnetic, thermographic and sensor-based methods. Research and development activities are focused on the development of new NDT methods and the improvement of existing methods. Special attention is given to 3D imaging techniques in combination with multi sensor data fusion processes. In addition methods for assessing the technical reliability of NDT systems are developed. Structural health monitoring based on sensors, which are integrated in materials or structures (smart structures and materials), is another research topic of the department.

Based on long-term expertise the department contributes significantly to international standardization and performs non-destructive testing, particularly in areas with particularly high safety requirements. Special know-how is available in the field of NDT in civil engineering.
